Dr. Eugene Carragee is a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Director of the Orthopaedic Spine Center at the Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He received his MD and did both Orthopaedic Surgery and Internal Medicine residencies at Stanford. He performed a fellowship in Spine and Pediatric Surgery at the University of Hong Kong. He trained in the US Army Medical Corps and served as a Public Health Officer in Civil Affairs, a Battalion and Command Surgeon in the US Army Special Operations Forces and as a Forward Surgical Team Commander. He has served numerous overseas duty assignments around the world. Surgical and research specialties include spinal deformity and reconstructive surgery for degenerative, neoplastic and infectious diseases. Research interests diagnostic and outcomes studies for axial pain syndromes. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, and the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine. Along with numerous publications, he has received 7 outstanding paper awards from the NASS and is the recipient of the prestigious Volvo Clinical Research Award in 2000 and the ISSLS Prize for Clinical Research in 2006.
